Smith Records Hat Trick, Lady Hornets Roll Past Williamson, 7-1

Sophomore Haylie Smith recorded a hat trick as the Wellsboro Girls Soccer team rolled to a 7-1 victory over Williamson on Tuesday evening.

"We settled for too many shots from distance in the first half, but challenged the girls to be more comfortable and confident in the attacking third," head coach Michael Reese said. "They responded well in the second half and did a much better job creating opportunities. A 7-1 win was a great result, but seeing the entire team contribute made it even more rewarding."

The Lady Hornets scored three times in the first half, led off by Smith not even five minutes into the contest. Juniors Luna Moyer and Aileen Bowers sandwiched Williamson's lone goal of the game to give Wellsboro a 3-1 lead at intermission. In the second, Wellsboro pitched a shutout with Smith adding a pair of goals. Junior Lauren Gehman also scored and senior Jadyn Dunlap switched in her keeper jersey for a regular one and scored on a penalty kick with 13:10 to go.

Wellsboro took 22 shots on goal to Williamson's 4 and had a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Dunlap made 2 saves in goal and sophomore Olive Twoey recorded one.

"It was a special night of firsts for our team," continued Reese. "Jadyn, Aileen and Ren (Lauren) each scored their first varsity goal, while Olive recorded her first varsity save and assist. We were also able to get everyone meaningful minutes, which was great to see."

Wellsboro improves to 5-1-1 (4-0-1 NTL). The team is back in action Thursday as they welcome Wyalusing to the Wellsboro Community Athletic Complex.
