Sophomore Haylie Smith scored a hat trick in the second half to help lead the Wellsboro Girls Soccer team to a 4-0 shutout of Towanda on Saturday morning.
The game was scoreless for nearly 60 minutes when Smith sent her first goal past Lady Knights. Her other two goals, the second assisted by junior Kate Bryant, came in under 10 minutes of game play.
Wellsboro's final goal of the game was scored by junior Ariel Acevedo, unassisted, with just over 10 minutes remaining.
"It wasn’t easy in the cold and wind, especially when we couldn't find the goal in the first half," head coach Michael Reese said. "The girls stayed patient, trusted each other and kept working. I'm proud of how they responded. Credit to Haylie for continuing to shoot and to Ariel for scoring her first career goal. That's a special moment."
Wellsboro out-shot the Lady Knights 19-1 on the day, with senior Jadyn Dunlap making the game's only save for her 10th shutout of the season and 25th of her career.
The Lady Hornets also had a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks.
The win improves Wellsboro to 12-3-1 overall and 10-1-1 in the NTL. The team is back in action Tuesday against Athens.
