The Wellsboro Boys Soccer team (15-2-2) pitched a 4-0 shutout over NTL rival Towanda in the District IV Class 2A Quarterfinals at Athens on Saturday.

"I am proud of the boys for how they found a way to win today," head coach John Shaffer said. "Playoffs are a different animal and the pressure can affect players. We also knew that playing Towanda a third game would prove difficult, there are no real secrets between the teams."

The Hornets took the first-half lead on a goal from freshman Callen Novak, then added three more second-half goals.

Seniors Coen Tennis and Dylan Tomlinson and sophomore Maddon Mascho added the second-half goals.

Seniors Kayden Pearson and Jacob Smith and junior Brayden Benjamin assisted on Wellsboro's goals.

Senior Kayden Rogers recorded the clean sheet, making three saves, for his fourth shutout of the season.

"Getting a goal before halftime gave us momentum and the team built on that in the second half," continued Shaffer. "We contained their two dangerous players, Kayden Rogers made some great saves and clearances on corner kicks. Our depth was a major positive, the players off the bench were game changers and kept the pressure on Towanda. Overall a great result for the boys and now to focus on a tremendous challenge in Central Columbia."

The win advances the Hornets to the semi-finals where they'll take on top-seeded Central Columbia, 8-0 winners over Lourdes Regional, at Loyalsock on Tuesday night.
