A day after their game was postponed due to weather, the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team shutout Galeton 4-0 in the rain on Thursday, October 12.
"It was a good game in tough conditions," said head coach John Shaffer. "It was wet and their small field really closes down space. I was happy with the number of chances we created but wish we would have finished more of them. We need to focus as we have 4 games over 6 days to finish the season."
A quick goal in the first three minutes by senior Noah Fitch, off an assist from senior Tanner Runyan, put the Hornets up 1-0. Wellsboro later increased the lead with 15 minutes remaining in the opening half as Fitch assisted Runyan to make it 2-0.
Wellsboro scored two more goals in the seocnd half, both off penalty kicks. Runyan made the first with 31 minutes remaining then junior Brett Rudy scored on the second penalty kick to make it 4-0 just three minutes later. The Hornets prevented any Galeton scoring attempts the rest of the way en route to their 10th shutout of the season.
Junior Nate Redell made 4 saves on the night.
Wellsboro also won the JV game, 9-1, to improve to 8-1 this season. Sophomore Conrad Becker scored a hat trick and finished the game with 4 totals goals. Freshmen Joseph Grab and Will Poirier scored two goals each, and Zack Rowland scored a goal. Poirier recorded 4 assists on the night. Grab, Becker, and Camron Littleton also assisted on goals.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 13-0-1 (10-0-1 NTL). The team will be back in action on Saturday, October 14 against Bloomsburg.
