Hornet boys rolls past Sayre, 14-0

10 first half goals in under 40 minutes led the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team to a 14-0 win over Sayre on Wednesday, October 4.
The win was the Hornets' 10th in a row, nine of them coming by shutout since tying Athens 2-2 back on September 5.
"The boys played awesome tonight," said head coach John Shaffer. "The quality of passing was brilliant. Now we have a few days to prepare for a tough match against Millville."
Senior Gabe Leach started the scoring on just two minutes into the game then eight minutes later senior Devin Webster assisted senior Noah Fitch to make it 2-0.
The Hornets then scored four goals in the next four minutes. Freshman Kaeden Mann scored in the 29th minute off an assist from Leach, senior Tanner Runyan scored unassisted in the 28th minute, junior Brett Rudy found junior Cam Tennis to make it 5-0 in the 27th minute, then Runyan found Rudy to make it 6-0 in the 26th minute.
10 minutes later Rudy found Leach for his second goal of the night to increase the Hornets' lead to 7-0 and Runyan found Mann to make it 8-0 with 15 and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Leach recorded his second assist of the game as he found Rudy with 13 minutes remaining and senior Nic Ingerick assisted Leach to complete his hat trick with 10 minutes remaining.
Wellsboro's JV team played in the second half and scored four goals of their own.
Freshman Will Poirier scored back-to-back goals to put the Hornets up 12-0. His first came with 27 minutes remaining on a Mann assist then with 19 minutes left sophomore Conrad Becker assisted. Senior Johnny Rowland got in on the scoring off an assist from freshman Joseph Grab to make it 13-0 with 13 minutes remaining, then Rowland assisted junior Adam Cornell in the final minute to make it 14-0.
Junior Nate Redell recorded his 9th straight shutout by recording a save.
In the JV game, the Hornets also picked up a shutout, winning 3-0. Anthony Dunkel scored two goals and Andre Rinebold scored one goal, assisted by Jonathan Wetzel.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 11-0-1 (9-0-1 NTL). The team will be back in action on Monday, October 9 at Millville.
